I Recently Became an Assistant PE Coach At an Elementary School

This is only my second day on the job and there is so much that happens throughout a day. I have decided to start logging all the interesting things because they need to be shared and I am not able to tweet everything out during the day. I also wish I could put a hidden camera on my body to witness some of the things I see. My fiancee is a 3rd grade teacher and shares quite a bit with me, but you cannot fully understand what she means until you experience it for yourself. The kids are great and so far, so is my job. They wear me out like no other, but its worth it. Also to the four people that actually read this, just know that my grammar isn’t great (Obviously why I’m in PE). And my fiancee isn’t going to edit and proof read my blogs because “I would have to re-write the whole thing.” So there’s that.

Throughout the day I like to keep stats in my head of things that I hear and observe. After two school days this is what I have so far and I’m sure I’m missing some.

  • 7 students of all ages that cry for no reason. (we just ignore it)
  • 5 students that have cried do to minor injuries (falling down, hit in face, etc.) I say to them “Do you wanna toughen up and go play or go sit in the corner and cry?” Only one has voluntarily gone to timeout…
  • I have three 5th grade boys that I need to start doing blocking drills with because I see D1 offensive lineman in their future.
  • 11 different students have done a Fortnite dance at some point.
  • 9 Fortnite shirts have been spotted.
  • 4 boys have asked me to join their Fortnite squad and gave me their gamer tags.
  • At least six student have said “my tummy hurts” after running one lap.
  • I convinced three third graders that my first name is actually “Coach.”
  • One lunchbox has been launched across the cafeteria (I have 45 minute lunch duty).
  • A kindergartner flipped me off. (Her finger was bleeding but still I was taken back for a moment).
  • A kindergartner told me three different times today (Morning bus duty, PE, afternoon bus duty) “Look how pretty my dress is.” Yes I smiled all three times, she’s adorable.
  • I witnessed a 3rd grade girl vomit into her food, so I casually pretended not to see it and let another employee take care of that situation.

There were a couple kids today doing that dance Spice Adams does that makes me laugh every time. GIF:

I really do enjoy my job. These kids are hilarious and make my job easier. I plan on updating y’all frequently so keep checking in on me. If you’re an educator please feel free to share funny stories with me. The days are long and tiring, we deserve all the laughs we can get.

Apaches Blaze By North Lake In The Regional Opener

img_4214-1

The #1 seed Tyler Junior College Apaches began regional play last night by defeating the North Lake Blazers 10-2 in 7 innings, making it 29 consecutive postseason wins for TJC. Starting pitcher Jacob Blatney paved the way for the Apache offense. After surrendering a two-run HR in the 2nd, Blatney came back and put up 4 more zeroes, keeping his offense in striking distance. The final line for Jacob Blatney: 6 innings, 5 hits, 2 earned runs, 4 walks, 6 strikeouts, and earned his 4th win of the season!

The Apache offense jumped out to an early lead after Mike Morissette hit a two-out double, then scored on Taylor Broadway’s RBI single to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st. The Tyler bats were then silenced for the next three innings as they failed to get anything going. Bottom of the 5th is when the Apache bats finally heated up as they hung a three spot on the board taking a 4-2 lead.

Chase Evans led off with a bunt single, next batter Kaleb Bell lays down a sacrifice bunt, but reaches on the errant throw. Next batter Ty Meissner (the best 9-hole hitter in the nation) came up big with 2RBI triple into the right-center gap! Braden Wise then drives in Meissner with a sac fly to cap off the three-run 5th inning, taking a 4-2 lead. After Blatney strikes out the side in the 6th, TJC adds two more in the bottom half to make it 6-2. Broadway drew a one-out walk, then scored on the RBI triple from Big Bad John Mike Bounds. The Evans sac fly drives in Bounds to take the 6-2 lead.

Michael Spinozzi took the mound in the top of the 7th. He surrendered two walks in the inning but managed to get a couple fly-outs to strand the runners for a scoreless frame. In the bottom half of the inning, TJC loaded the bases after Meissner, Morissette, and Broadway drew walks. This brings up Big Bad John with two outs…bad news for the Blazers. With the runners moving on the 3-2 pitch, North Lake’s Gabe Cox left a mistake over the middle of the plate and Bounds didn’t miss it! Big John called “GAME!” as he circled the pillows on the walk-off grand slam to mercy rule North Lake 10-2!

The Apaches will face the #2 seed Brookhaven Bears Friday at 3PM. The winner of this game will head to the District C Championship, Saturday at 4PM.

Ignore The Record, The Apaches Are A Scary Good Baseball Team

The Tyler Junior College baseball team will make the postseason for the 12th straight season. They finish the 2018 regular season with a winning percentage under .500, which hasn’t happened since the 2005 Apaches went 14-31. So you might be wondering to yourself…how exactly did the 26-27 Apaches make the playoffs?

Since 2014, TJC’s path to the playoffs has to go through one team, the Coastal Bend Cougars of Beeville, Texas. Coastal Bend College re-started their once discontinued baseball program, and became eligible for the start of the 2014 season. The Apaches won this year’s season series 4-3, and have now won this two-man conference for the 5th straight season, clinching the #1 seed in the District C Regional tournament. Even though Coastal Bend didn’t win conference, their 34-20 record helped them clinch the 6th seed in the regional tournament. Filling out the rest of the regional bracket will be the top 4 teams from the Metro Athletic Conference (Brookhaven, Eastfield, Richland, North Lake).

The average person could look at TJC’s record and think “Hmmm they’re 26-27, unranked, and statistics wise they don’t lead the nation in anything. I wouldn’t worry about them.” Anybody who has paid attention to junior college baseball in the last 4 years can tell you that this statement is inaccurate. Don’t forget that TJC is eyeing their 5th straight national title…they clearly have a target on their back.  I promise that if you go talk any team that has come across the postseason Apaches in recent years, they would say that they’d want to beat Tyler more than anybody else.

During this stretch of four consecutive national titles, in postseason play, the Apaches are 28-0, outscoring their opponents 230-87. The playoff Apaches are a different breed and opposing teams know it. Head Coach Doug Wren has pushed all the right buttons during this successful postseason run, and knows what it takes to get his players ready for the big moments. He’s also accompanied by assistant coaches Taylor White, Trenton Buchhorn, and Gunnar Quick, who all have won two national titles each with the Apaches. This is nothing new for this coaching staff, they are winners and won’t settle for anything less.

Pictured above is Head Coach Doug Wren wearing the last four championship rings.

The 2018 Tyler Junior College Apaches are a scary good baseball team. Look at the record all you want, it doesn’t show what this team is capable of. They have a loaded pitching staff of guys that can be effective as starters and relievers, and are 2nd in the nation in strikeouts with 391. They have an offense that score runs in so many different ways. They work deep counts, move runners over, and terrorize the base paths. Every position player on the team has at least one stolen base, it doesn’t matter who it is, they’re going. Also, I’d advise opposing pitchers to not leave the ball over the middle of the plate. Twelve, yes TWELVE different Apaches have homered this season. This lineup and bench are deep, and they can all do damage. Of the four position players who choose not to hit HR’s (Cade Watson, Braden Wise, Jacoby Bogue, and Tyler Abney) like to do other things such as get on base, steal bags, and move runners into scoring position. These four combine for 115 hits, 62 walks, 72 runs, 35 stolen bases, .313 batting average, and .414 on-base percentage. On top of all the offense, the Apaches have several players that can play sound defense all over the diamond. Coach Wren can write several different lineups with this team, and every single one of those guys are going to compete. If the offense gets rolling, and they minimize the damage on defense, this high energy Apache baseball team could go all the way and win their 5th straight national title.

Apaches will begin their “drive for five” Thursday, May 17th at 6PM. Tyler will play the winner of North Lake vs Richland. The District C Tournament will be played at Prestonwood Christian Academy, in Plano, TX.
